Q4 · Where models die

2026 French wildfire season

France burned 98,727 ha in 2026, nearly a third above its 1989 record. One Gironde pine fire took 42,000 ha.

The world stops matching the model. Regime change and leverage turn a small error fatal.

Why this quadrant

Wildfire damage is fat-tailed. Most ignitions stay small, and a few fires and a few years carry most of the burned area. In 2026 a single fire in the Gironde pine forest, burning from 22 July, covered about 42,000 ha, roughly 43% of France's mapped total for the year. That total, 98,727 ha as of 8 November 2026 per EFFIS, is 49% above the previous EFFIS maximum of 66,337 ha in 2022 and about 6.7 times the 2006-2025 average of 14,756 ha, so the historical record gave a poor guide to what one season could do. The landscape coupled the risks. Heat and drought, continuous pine plantation and unmanaged scrub let separate ignitions grow into large fires, and France needed planes and helicopters from seven other countries through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The record

  • As of 8 November 2026, EFFIS satellite mapping shows 98,727 hectares burned in France in 2026 across 386 mapped fires, the highest annual figure in the EFFIS series that starts in 2006.certain
  • The previous EFFIS annual high for France was 66,337 hectares in 2022, and the 2006-2025 annual average was 14,756 hectares.certain
  • France's highest annual burned area in the country-reported 1980-2013 series compiled by the European Environment Agency was 75,566 hectares in 1989.certain
  • The Gironde pine-forest fire near Bordeaux burned about 42,000 hectares, which AFP described as France's largest wildfire since 1949; the Prime Minister said on 1 August 2026 that the fires were under control.high
  • The main Fontainebleau forest fire, which started on 12 July 2026 beside the A6 motorway, burned close to 2,000 hectares; the prosecutor attributed it to a grinder spark during guardrail repair work.high
  • On 27 July 2026 the EU sent France 7 planes and 4 helicopters from Czechia, Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden and Turkiye, most from the rescEU fleet.certain
