Q4 · Where models dieFrench school riots 2026
School blockades became 7,950 police custody cases, 85% of them minors, and a weekend of looting.
The world stops matching the model. Regime change and leverage turn a small error fatal.
Why this quadrant
The movement began in the week of 21 September 2026 as lycée blockades over school conditions and the cost of living. By 13 October it had produced 7,950 police custody cases, 85% of them minors, most aged 15 or 16 according to the Paris prosecutor. On 17 October a national protest day turned into looting in Paris, Marseille, Lille and Nice, and at least 3,000 businesses reported damage or looting by 19 October. There was no single trigger such as the police shooting that set off the 2023 riots. Unrest led by school pupils, who sit outside the employment and housing pressures that earlier models of urban revolt rely on, moved from school gates to city-centre looting in under four weeks. The timing, location and spread of this unrest could not be read from past patterns, which places it in Q4.
